HSK 4 Most Confusing Word Pairs — Explained with Real Examples

A field guide to the eight word pairs that trip up HSK 4 learners, cross-checked against the official HSK 3.0 word list.

Why this guide is different

This guide is built against the official HSK 3.0 syllabus — the revised proficiency framework published by Chinese Testing International (CTI). HSK 3.0 restructures the old six-level ladder into a new six-level system with a much larger vocabulary and a clearer grammar spine. It is scheduled to globally launch in December 2026.

Here is the problem most learners do not realize: the overwhelming majority of online HSK resources, flashcard decks, and even paid courses are still built on HSK 2.0, the older framework that has been in place since 2010. If you are studying HSK 4 vocabulary today using those resources, a meaningful slice of what you are memorizing is either mis-levelled, deprecated, or missing the new collocations the 3.0 syllabus emphasizes. This guide is built against the 3.0 word list, so every pair below is one that still appears at HSK 4 under the new standard and is still tested in current item banks.

The HSK 4 level is where confusion between near-synonyms becomes a deliberate exam trap. At HSK 1 through 3, you can often get away with knowing one translation per word. At HSK 4, the examiners start asking you to choose between two words that both translate to the same English gloss but behave differently grammatically or carry different nuances. Below are the eight pairs that cause the most point loss, each with example sentences kept at HSK 4 level so you can study them without encountering grammar you have not yet seen.

1

了解 vs 知道

了解

liǎojiě

to understand, to comprehend through study or experience.

知道

zhīdào

to know, to be aware of a fact.

vs

Example — 了解

我想了解中国文化。

I want to understand Chinese culture.

Example — 知道

我知道他明天来。

I know he is coming tomorrow.

Key difference

知道 is factual awareness — you know that something is the case. 了解 is deeper — you understand the why, the background, or the texture of a topic. You can 知道 someone's name without 了解 them as a person.

What examiners test

Sentence-completion items where the object is a culture, a person, a situation, or a field of study. If the sentence implies depth of understanding rather than a bare fact, the answer is 了解.

2

认为 vs 以为

认为

rènwéi

to think, to hold an opinion (neutral, can still be correct).

以为

yǐwéi

to assume, to mistakenly think (implies the assumption was wrong).

vs

Example — 认为

我认为你说得对。

I think you are right.

Example — 以为

我以为你是中国人。

I thought you were Chinese — but you are not.

Key difference

认为 states an opinion that the speaker still holds. 以为 almost always signals that the belief turned out to be false. If the next clause reveals a contradiction, the verb must be 以为.

What examiners test

The second clause. A follow-up like 可是不 / 但是他不是 signals a mistaken belief, so the blank takes 以为, not 认为.

3

适合 vs 合适

适合

shìhé

to suit, to be suitable (a verb).

合适

héshì

suitable, fitting (an adjective).

vs

Example — 适合

这件衣服适合你。

This piece of clothing suits you.

Example — 合适

这个颜色很合适。

This color is quite suitable.

Key difference

适合 is a verb and takes an object — it describes the action of something suiting someone. 合适 is an adjective and is modified by 很 — it describes a quality of the subject. The 很 test is the fastest heuristic: if the sentence needs 很, the answer is 合适.

What examiners test

Grammatical slot. A blank before a noun with no copula wants 适合; a blank after 很 with no object wants 合适.

4

或者 vs 还是

或者

huòzhě

or, used in declarative statements.

还是

háishì

or, used in questions.

vs

Example — 或者

我们明天或者后天去。

We will go tomorrow or the day after.

Example — 还是

你喝茶还是咖啡?

Do you drink tea or coffee?

Key difference

还是 only appears in questions, including embedded questions introduced by 不知道 / 你想. 或者 appears in statements where the speaker is listing alternatives they themselves will decide between.

What examiners test

Sentence type. If the clause is interrogative or embedded under a doubt verb, the answer is 还是. If it is a plain declarative, the answer is 或者.

5

发现 vs 发明

发现

fāxiàn

to discover (something that already existed).

发明

fāmíng

to invent (something that did not exist before).

vs

Example — 发现

科学家发现了新的星球。

Scientists discovered a new planet.

Example — 发明

中国人发明了造纸术。

The Chinese invented papermaking.

Key difference

发现 reveals what was already there — a planet, a law, a problem. 发明 creates what did not exist — a device, a technique, a method. The object's prior-existence is the deciding factor.

What examiners test

The object. Planet, truth, and mistake take 发现. Phone, technology, and machine take 发明.

6

影响 vs 作用

影响

yǐngxiǎng

to influence, an influence (can be positive or negative).

作用

zuòyòng

effect, function, role (the way something works).

vs

Example — 影响

天气影响我的心情。

Weather influences my mood.

Example — 作用

这种药有很好的作用。

This kind of medicine has a good effect.

Key difference

影响 is external and directional — A exerts an influence on B. 作用 is internal and structural — it describes the function or effect a thing itself produces. You can replace an 影响 but you study a 作用.

What examiners test

The surrounding verb. 起…作用 and 有…作用 are fixed collocations that lock in 作用. 对…有影响 locks in 影响.

7

感动 vs 感觉

感动

gǎndòng

to be moved, touched emotionally.

感觉

gǎnjué

to feel, a feeling (sensation or perception).

vs

Example — 感动

这个故事让我很感动。

This story moved me deeply.

Example — 感觉

我感觉今天有点儿冷。

I feel it is a bit cold today.

Key difference

感动 is always emotional and almost always positive or poignant — it requires something touching the heart. 感觉 is a neutral perception — physical sensation, mood, or opinion. A cold day is not 感动; a selfless act is.

What examiners test

The object clause. If the sentence is about an external event stirring emotion, the answer is 感动. If it is about a subjective perception, the answer is 感觉.

8

简直 vs 几乎

简直

jiǎnzhí

simply, outright (emphatic, often subjective exaggeration).

几乎

jīhū

almost, nearly (quantitative closeness).

vs

Example — 简直

他简直是天才!

He is simply a genius!

Example — 几乎

我几乎等了一个小时。

I waited almost an hour.

Key difference

简直 is an emotional emphasis that the speaker uses to express amazement or disbelief. 几乎 is a measurable near-miss — it can be replaced by 差不多 without losing the meaning. If the sentence describes a quantity approaching a limit, it is 几乎; if it expresses shock, it is 简直.

What examiners test

The following structure. 简直 is often followed by an exclamatory predicate (简直是 + noun). 几乎 is followed by a quantified verb phrase (几乎 + verb + duration/number).

Three tone sandhi traps at HSK 4

Beyond vocabulary, HSK 4 is the first level where tone sandhi stops being a footnote and starts being graded in listening items. Dictionaries list citation tones, but native speech applies three regular shifts. If your flashcards store dictionary pinyin, you will misread the words below on exam day.

Trap 1: Third-tone sandhi (三声变调)

When two third tones meet, the first one shifts to a second tone. 你好 is written nǐ hǎo but pronounced ní hǎo. At HSK 4, this also affects pairs like 很好 (hěn hǎo → hén hǎo) and 想买 (xiǎng mǎi → xiáng mǎi). Any flashcard that teaches you to read the first character as a third tone in these pairs is teaching you an error.

Trap 2: "一" tone changes

一 (yī) changes tone depending on what follows. Before a first, second, or third tone, it becomes fourth tone: 一杯 (yì bēi), 一直 (yì zhí), 一起 (yì qǐ). Before a fourth tone, it becomes second tone: 一次 (yí cì), 一定 (yí dìng). Only when counting or at the end of a number does it keep its original first tone. Most community decks store yī for every occurrence.

Trap 3: "不" tone change

不 (bù) is normally a fourth tone, but before another fourth tone it flips to a second tone. So 不去 is pronounced bú qù, not bù qù, and 不好 is bú hǎo. Before first, second, and third tones, 不 stays fourth tone: 不吃 (bù chī), 不来 (bù lái), 不好 already covered. This is a single rule, but it covers a huge fraction of spoken output, so getting it wrong is immediately audible.
